OK, so maybe newspapers aren’t DEAD…
It’s the morning of Independence Day and my 3 year old boy might want to watch fireworks tonight. Being a good digital daddy, I hopped to Google and typed “fireworks encino” into the search box and clicked.
Nothing.
I messed around with a few alternatives (the zip code, July 4th) and still got nothing.
Yahoo, MSN… nothing.
Ask.com at least got me within one click to its CitySearch property, which had lots of fireworks in Los Angeles but nothing particularly near Encino.
“D’oh!” I thought, then clicked to the Los Angeles Times website — home of massive Sam-Zell-mandated layoffs just yesterday — and found a handy list of fireworks displays planned for tonight… on page 2 of which was one relatively close to us in Woodland Hills.
Sure, the newspaper revenue model is wasting away, the paper uses too much actual paper and gas and ink and it has too many employees doing too many things that other businesses can do better… but nobody is better at timely, local and relevant information.
Let’s hope the newspapers figure out which side of the “change or die” fence they want to land on, because I sure do like fireworks.
