Finally joining the 21st Century… or maybe the late 20th… I bought an iPod

13 March 2007 | Internet, Media | Comments

Somehow, for no reason that I can explain other than being cheap and never having made the time, I managed not to buy an iPod until my birthday last month.  It came weeks ago and I carried it around with me in my briefcase trying to find a moment to open the box.  That didn’t happen. And didn’t happen.

But then late last night — before getting on a plane to Boston (I’m trapped in LAX recovering from a canceled flight as I write this, thinking up choice things to say to Delta’s Tim Mapes when I see him tomorrow) — I opened it, charged it and downloaded a lot of random MP3s and podcasts.  I’ll dive in once I’m over the clouds. Will this change the face of my media behavior?  Stay tuned, gentle readers.
Even pre-iPod, I’ve been devoted to the $25 upgrade to TiVo’s TiVoToGo software that lets me drag content from my home TiVo box across the network to my desktop PC and then compress the content to mpeg4s and drop them into my PDA or, now, video iPod. I’m never going to spend $1.99 on an episode of TV that was broadcast free (sorry, Steve Jobs) but I’ll happily push content around from one digital platform to another.  You can get a LOT of content into an 80GB iPod.  My question: does the iPod’s fast-forwarding ability beat that of the Treo? I like to have the option of skipping the ads (yikes), just like everybody else.

I think it’s pretty easy to fast forward while watching video on the iPod. Also, you can save a lot of battery juice by watching videos with the brightness turned down to about half. Mario told me this, I tried it, and it worked really well!

I can’t bring myself to spend $400 on an iPod for some reason. I bought a mini a long time ago and it breaks all the time but of course every time a new iPod series comes out I secretly salivate over them.

Do you think you’ll download videos and such and really watch them? Let me know, I’d be interested…maybe you’ll convince me to get one for myself =)
