Daily Variety blows coverage of “Green Arrow” movie

11 April 2007 | Culture, Media, TV & Movies | Comments

An article in today’s Daily Variety about a new movie featuring the DC Comics superhero “Green Arrow” caught my eye. Here’s the relevant paragraph:

David Goyer, who helped return Batman to the bigscreen, will produce “Super Max,” a tale that finds DC Comics’ superhero the Green Arrow incarcerated in a special prison and stripped of his powers.

The problem? Green Arrow is DC’s version of Robin Hood, or Batman with a bow and arrow. He has no super powers!
I admit, I take superheroes and comic books more seriously than most of the planet, but as both a journalist and a comic book collector, this bothers me. It’s not like this is a difficult detail to get right.  Wikipedia has a fine article on Green Arrow. A random Google search displays results that do not suggest super powers for the archer. Variety even has a comic-books-to-movies blog that posts on this topic and gets the character right!

Finding those three links took me about 90 seconds. Too bad that Pamela McClintock, the Variety article’s author, didn’t bother to spend that much time.
