Capsule Review: 60Frames.com
In last Wednesday’s Daily Variety I spotted a review of the new slate of original online content at 60Frames.com, a new site that is funded by UTA.
The Variety review goes into more detail, but the short version is that this is yet another collection of wannabe Saturday Night Live skits.
I looked at the premiere episode of “Cockpit” and got about 40 seconds into “Erik the Librarian” before I found myself yawning and closed the browser window.
Why is it that the first genre most of these sites devolve to is comedy? And not only comedy but badly acted, over-the-top, summer camp comedy? At least “Prom Queen” and “Lonely Girl” broke that mold, but why do content creators out there think that there’s anything inherently addictive about comedy as a genre? Mystery and romance, suspense… THOSE are genres that will have viewers coming back for more. Moreover, the other thing that will have repeat customers among audience members is depth of characterization, which these skits lack.
It isn’t the online part of online content that isn’t working; it’s the content itself.
